For coaches and teams

Basketball Practice Jerseys

Basketball practice jerseys are reversible jerseys that let a coach split a group into two teams by flipping the jersey: dark side against light side. Pro90 Elite practice jerseys are black on one side and white on the other, with numbers printed front and back on both sides, and come in team packs of 5 or 10 that ship in 3–5 business days.

What are basketball practice jerseys called?

Coaches call them practice jerseys, reversibles or scrimmage jerseys. They are two layers of mesh sewn together, one color on each side, so every player can switch teams in a few seconds.

The other common option is pinnies (also called scrimmage vests or pennies): loose, single-layer mesh vests worn over a T-shirt. Pinnies come in one color each, so you need two sets to split a team.

Pinnies are cheaper per piece, but you buy two colors and they are hard to read from the bench. A numbered reversible does both jobs: practice and scrimmage jersey during the week, team uniform on game day.

How many practice jerseys does a team need?

One per player on the roster. A 10-pack numbered 0–9 covers two full teams of five with no repeated numbers. For a bigger roster, add the men’s 5-pack numbered 15–19 or a youth 5-pack (0–4 or 5–9), or fill single numbers with individual jerseys.

Running practice with numbered reversibles

  • Scrimmages: flip half the group to white and play. Numbers on both sides mean nobody is unreadable after switching.
  • Drills and rotations: call players by number instead of name, which is faster with a new group.
  • Tryouts: hand out #0–9, write names next to numbers on your clipboard, and track every player from the sideline.
  • Stats: assistants and parents can chart shots and minutes by number.

Frequently asked questions

What do basketball players wear for practice?
Most teams practice in reversible jerseys over athletic shorts, so the coach can split the group into two teams by color. Some programs use pinnies over a T-shirt instead. Numbered reversibles also work as game uniforms, so one set covers practice and games.
Where can I buy basketball practice jerseys with numbers?
Pro90 Elite sells reversible basketball practice jerseys numbered front and back on both sides, in men’s, women’s and youth team packs. A 10-pack numbered 0–9 costs about $10.50 a jersey and ships in 3–5 business days.
Can I get basketball pinnies with numbers?
Yes, but numbered pinnies are usually printed on one side and come in one color, so you need two sets to split a team. A numbered reversible jersey gives you both colors in one piece, with the number on both sides.
Can practice jerseys be used for games?
Yes. Pro90 Elite reversibles are sized jerseys with numbers on the front and back of both sides, so the same set works as a home and away uniform for rec leagues, travel teams and school intramurals.
What are the downsides of reversible jerseys?
Two layers of mesh are a little warmer and heavier than a single-layer jersey, and the colors are fixed (black and white for Pro90 Elite). They also can’t carry names or logos on both sides; for those, custom single-sided jerseys are the better fit.
How do I wash practice jerseys?
They are machine washable. To keep printed numbers looking new, turn jerseys inside out, wash cold with similar colors, and hang dry or tumble dry on low.
How fast do Pro90 Elite practice jerseys ship?
Stock jerseys ship in 3–5 business days, already numbered. Nothing to design or approve.
